Depending on your router, you may have problems connecting the iKamand to the internet. Read this guide to configuring your router.


Network Frequency Band 2.4 Ghz vs 5 Ghz


The iKamand can only connect to WiFi networks on the 2.4 Ghz frequency band. The iKamand is used outside and 2.4 GHz wireless networks cover a much larger range than 5 GHz networks.


Use your 2.4 Ghz WiFi network or Guest WiFi network to connect to the iKamand.


If your 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz network share the same name:

  • If they have the same password, your iKamand should be able to connect to the 2.4 Ghz network
  • If they have different passwords, your iKamand will not be able to connect to the 2.4 Ghz network.

Yyou may need to rename your 2.4 Ghz network before attempting to connect your iKamand or briefly deselect the 5 Ghz network in your router settings.



Security/WPA2 networks and Passwords


The iKamand can only connect to secure WPA2 networks with a password.


If you're on iKamand Firmware Version 1.0.49 or greater or bought your iKamand after March 2019: 

Both the SSID (network name) and password must be 32 characters long or less in order to connect.


If you're on iKamand Firmware Version 1.0.48 or less and bought your iKamand before March 2019: 

Both the SSID (network name) and password must be 20 characters long or less in order to connect. If your WiFi SSID has a lot of punctuation in it, it should be less than 17 characters long.


Captive portal networks, such as those found at hotels or coffee shops, with special sign up screens or terms and conditions are not compatible with the iKamand. The iKamand will not be able to connect.



Spectrum Networks


If you have trouble getting your iKamand connected to the 2.4 Ghz network:


The password on the bottom of the modem may be incorrect if your router has ever been reset. 


You will need to find the password by accessing the admin settings from your router


How to Access Admin Settings:

  1. From a web browser key in 192.168.0.1 to go to the modem settings. 
  2. Put in "admin" for the User and get the Password from the label on your modem. 
  3. At the basic setup page, look for the Wireless 2.4 Ghz section. 
  4. The pre-shared key is the password you should use to setup your iKamand.

Mobile Hotspot


Your iKamand can connect to a mobile hotspot. You can even connect your iKamand to a hotspot on the same phone you are using.


The iKamand may connect poorly to mobile hotspots or lose connection should the hotspot drop. If this happens and the LED goes teal, restart your hotspot and restart the iKamand by unplugging it and powering it on again.

WiFi Extender


Use a WiFi extender to extend your WiFi if your iKamand is having trouble connecting to the internet when far away from the router. It's best to connect your iKamand to the WiFi network without the WiFi extender then set up the extender.



Poor/Dropping Connection - Too Many Devices or Interference


Many devices also use 2.4 GHz signaling. Your iKamand may struggle to connect to the WiFi if there is interference. Use a WiFi extender or bring the router closer to the iKamand. Disconnect some of your other devices from the WiFi and try connecting your iKamand.



Best Practises for Good Connection

  • Update to the latest iKamand software. Navigate to Devices (Kamado icon in the top right of Cook tab) and press update.
  • Keep your iKamand less than 30 ft from the router when in use.
  • Use a WiFi extender if a thick wall or metal separates your iKamand from the router.
  • If you have many other devices connected to your Internet Service Provider or WiFi router, disconnect some of the other devices before adding your iKamand.
  • The iKamand may connect poorly to mobile hotspots or lose connection should the hotspot drop.



New Router or Region


Your iKamand may show Offline on the app homepage and the LED may be teal. Give your iKamand new WiFi credentials by navigating to Devices (Kamado icon in the top right of Cook tab)Swipe left on your device --> Change WiFi



Google WiFi Router


Google WiFi automatically routes devices between the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz band. This means that even if the device connects to the 2.4 Ghz band, the router may switch it at any given moment. 


This is an issue many other WiFi and 2.4 Ghz devices have on Google WiFi routers.

Possible Workaround

  • Creating a Guest network on Google WiFi. This is more likely to be 2.4 Ghz.
  • Keep the iKamand far enough from the Google WiFi to remain on the 2.4 Ghz network. (2.4 has a longer range than 5).
  • Use your a different router that is not Google WiFi.
  • Use a 2.4 Ghz WiFi extender on your Google WiFi. Connect the iKamand to the WiFi extender.
